Little kids tend to get very close to their backpacks.  By that we mean a little kid’s backpack is one of those things in their young life that they will always remember with fondness.  Little kids will feel a sense of having something special that belongs to them when they use a backpack of their own daily.  To this day I remember with fondness my lunch box I carried to elementary school.  No one used backpacks then!

Getting a little kid a backpack can be pleasurable, easy, expense or even stressful.  Some little kids have their eye on a type of bag they would like.  Perhaps they want a theme backpack or particular colors.  Many times a little kid will grow cold toward a backpack and you will end up with another one, or even three (knowing how parents are suckers).  As well, some kids are rough on their backpacks, and depending on the quality, the bag may start to wear out after 6 months.  Bigger kids don’t do this as much.

A little kid will need a backpack that appropriately fits him or her.  Make sure you are not going to buy an adult or teenager’s bag.  Luckily most of the cute themed plastic looking backpacks that you see in Wal-Mart and Target are usually small and it is obvious they are for a little kids.  If possible get a backpack that has padded shoulder straps, and possibly a waist strap.  Check the zippers for quality and the seams.  As well make sure your little kid’s backpack has the right amount of pockets you think they will need.  Little kids don’t need many pockets as they don’t usually have too many notebooks, calculators or cell phones.

Online shopping provides the best choice of little kid’s backpacks.  No one store usually carries as much stock as you can find on the internet.  As well you can leisurely shop at home and many times don’t have to pay shipping.  Still it is sometimes fun to visit your local stores and see what is available or currently popular for little kids.  Shopping online usually is cheaper as well, as long as shipping isn’t bad.

Most little kids will want a backpack based on some character or TV show they know, such as Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants, Spiderman, Batman, High School Musical or Wizards of Waverly Place.  You know what we mean I am sure.  Not every popular character or show is available as a little kid’s backpack, but many are.  As well you can find plenty of backpacks that have animal themes if your kid will like one of those better.  We have seen backpacks shaped like lions, ladybugs, sharks, dogs and horses.

Many parents simply choose to get their little kid’s backpack from a quality retailer such as LL Bean, and are not concerned about it representing a popular character or theme.  They will pick the backpack out and simply make sure it looks good for a little kid.  To them quality may be more important than looks.  They may even get it monogrammed.  This is a good way to get a little kid’s backpack as well.

Whatever you decide on a little kids backpack, as long as your kid enjoys it, it will work out somehow.  The most important thing is they have one if they need it and it is one that will be easy for them to carry as well as comfortable.
