Among the popular types of kids backpacks that parents are looking for are kids Hip Hop backpacks.  But what is Hip Hop and how can it manifest itself into a backpack?

Hip Hop is a style of music, entertainment, art and fashion.  Most people are familiar with Rap music, and breakdancing.  Those both fall under Hip Hop.  As well, being a DJ, graffiti artist and talking a particular slang all fall under Hip Hop.

It first came out of the Bronx in the 1970′s.  At first it was started by DJ’s who used two turntables to loop particular bars of music together and create songs with heavy beats, scratching, and repeating sounds.  Later, rapping evolved around that, and then a style of dancing, talking and fashion.  DJ Clive Campbell from Jamaica is credited with originating the movement.  Hip Hop culture is now global.

Hip Hop Fashion has been around many years and is best known now days for the long hanging pants that guys wear and super tight jeans girls wear.  It is a very popular form of fashion having originated in New York City.  Early hip hop fashion consisted of brightly colored sweat suits, sheepskin, leather bomber jackets and Doc Martin boots, or Clark shoes.  The accessories included big glasses and a lot of big gold jewelry (remember Mr. T).

In the 1990′s hip hop evolved into baggy pants, more African influence, bright clothing, and wearing clothes backwards.  Today hip hop has its own set of designers and fashion has gone main stream with a steep price tag to match.  But many kids love this style, and want a backpack to match their fashion statement.  Now jeans are tight and shirts are short, almost going back to 80′s fashions.  It seems almost anything goes and hip hop is a mix of 70′s to the 90′s styles, with some modern touches.

So what kinds of kid’s backpacks are Hip Hop and how do you get one?

There probably is no particular style that is hip hop, and if anything a kid’s backpack can be turned into a Hip Hop style simply by adding elements of Hip Hop, like rap music artist’s names written in graffiti.  A good idea to turn a denim kid’s backpack into Hip Hop would be to paint their own name in graffiti style all over it, maybe add touches to make it more colorful.  Of course a backpack with a Disney character on it or camouflage would not be Hip Hop!  You are going to have to start with a plain backpack.

There are also backpacks available for kids of any age that actually have a speaker system in them, pointing out of both sides.  They may be a little costly for younger kids, but Hip Hop loving teens would love to have one, since Hip Hop music is the most well known part of the genre.  They would be on top of the world walking down the street with a backpack like that, Hip Hop music radiating from their bag.

There is actually a category of Hip Hop that is called “Backpack.”  This is rap type music that is usually artsy, soft, social conscious, political and preachy or some combination of those.  Popular backpack bands are Dead Prez, Jurassic 5 and The Roots.  Some define a Backpacker as a person who has learned to separate Rap from Hip Hop, and knows the difference.

What ever you decide to do for your Kid’s Hip Hop Backpack, it is most likely going to be necessary to dress it up some to really be Hip Hop.  Start with plain and think graffiti, color and rap-type music, and then add your own touches with fabric paint or markers, as well as adding some African looking ornamentals to it.
